This diptych, painted using grisaille technique, references the current times. Artistic influences who painted in this style include Old Masters of the Renaissance such as Jan Van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch and Contemporary painters such as Audrey Flack and Zhang Xiaogang. Grisaille painting has associations with authority, durability, and expressing the divine. In the juxtaposition of what cannot be controlled versus what can, I explore the struggle between cynicism and idealism, negativity and positivity, dark and light, and angst and peace. How can we move forward and exercise self-responsibility as we move through the uncertainties of this unprecedented time?
